Sodium Chloride Drives Autoimmune Disease by the Induction of Pathogenic Th17 Cells

Susan Nabiloo, a graduated immunology student from Semnan University was the speaker of this journal club. First, she reviewed the risk factors of autoimmune diseases such as Multiple sclerosis, and type I diabetes.  Then, she described the results of a study conducted in University of Cambridge in which the direct effect of increased Nacl absorption on Naïve TCD4 + cell population, differentiation of these cells into pathogenic Th17 cells, and eventually increasing the symptoms of autoimmune diseases were evaluated. “ The results of this study revealed that excessive salt can cause Th17 cell differentiation, induction of p38 / MAPK pathway, induction of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNFα, IL2, IL9 and as GMCSF / CSF2, and increase in CCR6 which is required for Th17 pathogenicity.” she added.
Accordingly, salt increases may decrease the severity and symptoms of autoimmune diseases; while by limiting salt in the diet of these patients the symptoms may improve.
At the end of the session, her comprehensive presentation was appreciated and the issue was discussed
